Bull Elk - Wapiti.

wapiti, bull elk, bugling

This time the winner was this guy and his bugling was a challenge to all to try to usurp that dominance. Next time, he wasn't so lucky - the following morning the other bull had the harem and this bull was standing off to the side. The Shawnee name for elk is "wapiti", meaning 'white rump'. Wapiti were nearly eradicated after Europeans settled North America, and by the early 20th century they were nearly gone - fortunately, their numbers have risen since then, and hopefulyl, continue to rise. Wapiti, Bull elk, bulls, bugling, Jasper National Park, Canada. (Cervus Elaphus)
