Mature Bison Bull in Landscape, Yellowstone NP.
Though bison have managed to somehow remain, despite their massive slaughter during the 1900's, the survival of todays bison herds is still vulnerable. Disease, such as brucellosis from cattle, is a very real and potentially devastating threat to their well-being. The future of the bison herds looks hopeful, due largely due the well-intended efforts of many conservation groups. Hopefully, they'll continue to replenish the Great Plains with their dominating presence, and maybe once again we'll be able to witness populations so great that the plains "become black and appear as if in motion" with their numberless herds. Male, bull bison, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. Bison bison
