American Wigeon

American Wigeon, female, summer plumage, Alaska.

I'm a big fan of side-lighting, particularly on wildlife subjects. I rather the warmth and detail it can bring out, as well as the interplay of the light with shadow. This image was taken just outside of Anchorage, Alaska. The American Wigeon, also known as 'Baldpate', come north to Alaska in the spring to breed, and flies as far south as Southern Mexico and eveni the northern reaches of South America for the winter. (Anas americana)
