Bull Moose
Shedding Velvet.

Every
fall, the bull moose shed the 'velvet' growth that covers their antlers,
the skin-like covering that provides the nutrients to the antlers to
grow so quickly. Research indicates bulls use more energy growing their
antlers every year than the cows do during a pregnancy. Usually late
August or early September is the time when the bulls begin to shed the
velvet, and often will be seen scraping their antlers on vegetation
to help remove the velvet, and polish those antlers. Denali National
