Bison, called 'Tatanka' by the native American Sioux, were a vital cog in the churning ecosystem of the Great Plains of North America. Often called 'buffalo', bison have lived in the Black Hills area for as many as 15 000 years. Native Americans relied on bison to provide them wth food, clothing, shelter, tools, even, in some ways as an object for worship. Male, or bull, bison, Black Hills, South Dakota.
